Burglar - Jailed for 21 months.

A 21 year old Syston Man, Michael Thompson, was sentenced to 21 months imprisonment on Tuesday 21st April 2009 by Leicester Crown Court for 9 Burglaries and breach of a community order. The offences (mainly shed breaks at allotments) occurred throughout 2008 in the Meadow Lane area of Birstall and Upper Church Street area of Syston. During the period in question, some 60 offences of burglary, theft and criminal damage on the allotments were reported to the Police in Birstall and Syston.
Michael Stephen Anthony Thompson was arrested following a targeted plain clothes Police operation run by the Syston and Birstall Neighbourhood Policing Team catching him red-handed and leading to the recovery of some 200 stolen items.
Inspector Duncan Southall (Charnwood Local Policing Unit Commander) said, "This was an excellent result down to good intelligence from the communities and the hard work of the Syston and Birstall Neighbourhood Teams. Particular mention goes to PC Andy Oliver and PCSO Glen Freeman who ran the operation and the Response Officers who assisted. When Thompson was remanded, the spate of offences stopped. This was a good result for the local Policing Team and the people of Birstall and Syston"

Petrol Station Robbery - witnesses sought.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a robbery at a petrol station in Birstall.
The incident happened at about 9.20pm on Thursday April 9 at a garage on the A6 Loughborough Road, Birstall.
Two men entered the shop, one sprayed the cashier with a substance - which has yet to be identified - whilst the other took a quantity of cash. Both men ran off towards the city in the direction of the Red Hill roundabout.
The first man was wearing a white hooded top, a grey hooded jacket, dark bottoms and white footwear. The second wore a dark hooded top and bottoms.
Detective Sergeant Paul Kenyon, who is investigating the incident, said: "This was an extremely frightening experience for the cashier. Thankfully he was not injured in the incident apart from suffering after-effects from the spray.
"As well as detectives working on the investigation, officers from Charnwood local policing unit, including officers from the local neighbourhood team, will be undertaking additional reassurance patrols over the next few days."
"We are in the very early stages of our investigation and forensic examination of the scene is being carried out. I really want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident who remembers seeing two men fitting the description."

Girl assaulted in Birstall

Officers are appealing for witnesses after a 13-year-old girl was assaulted in Birstall.
The incident happened at around 9.30pm on Tuesday March 31, 2009 as the victim and her friend were walking along Wanlip Lane and when they neared the junction with Lambourne Road they became aware of three youths cycling behind them.
The girls moved out of the way to let them past when one of the youths insulted the victim before punching her in the face and riding off towards Dalby Avenue.
The victim received a minor injury to her cheek but did not seek medical treatment.
The youth who hit the victim is described as white, between 16 and 18-years-old and of slim build. He had short brown hair and was riding a mountain bike. The other two youths are described as white.
PC Richard Spivey, who is investigating the incident, said: "We would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed this assault or perhaps knows the person responsible.
"We are particular keen to speak to a woman who was walking her dog at the time of the incident and may have seen what happened. We would ask her to get in touch with any information she may have as it may assist with our enquiries."

Birstall Burglaries - Arrests

Police at Charnwood LPU have this week released the following information:-

During the last three months, a total of 8 persons have been arrested in connection with burglaries in Birstall, one in connection with 5 linked crimes.

One offender has been charged in relation to 2 burglaries and is believed to be responsible for a number of shed break-ins in the village.

House burglaries so far this year are showing a reduction of almost 50% over the equivalent period of 2008.
